dovecot 2.4.x director

HI
Has anyone managed to create a fork or other solution that provides 
director functionality? A small setup where it can be managed, for 
example, with Rabit/Redis, is one thing, but not a larger environment. 
The documentation for 2.4.x seems to have something like this:
