It is easier to write one from the ground up. My performance observations are based on experience with production IMAP servers and on writing actual SMTP & IMAP server code compliant with the current protocols. Yes, this code may be inefficient, can be optimized. Yet this seems obvious: regardless of how quickly a server can do a task, not doing this task (parsing, conversion and altering bytes in any way) saves time.
