There's nothing special about IDLE, it's just a convenient long running
command. The responses were unsolicited responses, just the same. Really,
the only magic about IDLE is that the syntax implies a long wait before the
DONE. In principle, any command with a literal could be used, except
servers reasonably assume the literal will follow shortly, plus you'd never
quite know whether you'd get expunges.

No, I think it's thinking that some responses are more unsolicited than
others.
