each maildir has:
.folder
.folder.subfolder
...
and in each folder or subfolder the following:
cur <--  acknowledged, unseen/seen
new <-- unseen, unacknowledged
tmp <-- mail delivery
old <-- unknown... some say yes some no...
maildirfolder <-- zero-length file
