It is impossible to build outside the source directory.

Please consider using automake.

Attached a patch which removes Rules.in and all Makefiles under
the src directory.  The patch was created against the 0.34 
release. The doc and tests directories have Makefile.in instead 
of the Makefile now.  To create a release, run:
autoreconf --install --force --verbose
before packaging the tarball.

Be sure to install the latest autoconf, libtool, automake
releases 
available before making a release.

There are two source files changed to get it compiled on 
Cygwin.
