Thanks. It worked! Here is what I did to get things to work with a fresh 
copy of the src:

cd libetpan
./configure
make realclean
./autogen.sh CFLAGS="-isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk -arch ppc 
-arch i386" 
LDFLAGS="-syslibroot,/usr/include/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk -arch 
ppc -arch i386"
make

The result is a set of universal libs.
