The answer given by Michael does rather fit but the way of retrieving  
the folder list (and information associated to the folder) is often  
specific to the type of mailstorage, that's why I'll rather advise  
you to use the lower-level API specific for each storage.
You can have a look at etpanX or etpan-ng source to know how to  
retrieve folder list of imap.
etpan-ng shows how to retrieve the newsgroups list for nntp.
for filesystem based mailstorage, I advise you to use one mailstorage  
per mailbox.
