"could not initialize application"

I wanted to give etpan a try, so I downloaded the latest releases of libetpan (0.32) and etpan (0.3). They built and installed fine, but when I try to run etpan I get could not initialize application googling turns up no useful tips. I tried creating a ~/.libetpan/config directory as well, using the sample config files from the libetpan website, but no luck.
