This sounds somewhat similar to the problems I have had. It compiles / makes beautifully but craps out when run. bt's that made vague references to gtk and other similar stuff. All I can suggest is double check your wx-config symlink in wxWidgets/build really is going where it should as I know I did remove and recreate build directoty but somehow it still screwed up. 

I have noticed in recent days / week that when I did wx cvs update, there have been makefile / configure changes often two or three days running so maybe there is some collateral screwup there. 

Wish I had a better answer. I share the frustration :-(
