I don't recall, if there was a real decision. What *was* said is: This will lead to the effect, that a newly incoming mail, resorts an old mail, posibly the one just in the viewer. This may be unwanted. So it probably needs to be a configurable option. There was also a suggestion to simply switch threading (temporarily) off, when sorting by date or size. IHMO this also sounds like a reasonable idea. (In fact I just switch threading off, when I sort by date or size and _really_ want the correct result.
