HTML viewer: handling spaces at the beginning of the line

When the HTML viewer interprets a plain text message,
might it somehow respect whitespace at the beginning
of the line?

I assume plain text is not put in a PRE element because this 
interferes with line wrapping?  If there is no HTML is 
a message, maybe the text viewer could be invoked?
