The first time around, the problem was simply the existence of the old
workfiles because of a restoration due to failing hard drives.  This time
around I was stumped that things got odd even after I cleared out the
digest work directories.  I don't think I ever applied the sort.

If I did, it was a number of incarnations ago, and things have been OK
until now, even across at least 3 machines since then!
