replying to myself here...

so the above output is clearly not debug 1000. I tried again and the log
output is now as long as my arm. The interesting thing is that this time it
processed all of the tokens that had died previously. I now have 6 accept
responses in my test gmail account. I had already reject-quiet killed all of
those tokens using the web interface, so I'm not sure why they are still
around to get responded to.
The debug output still contains the same error message as shown above, but it
doesn't die after the message as it was before. I haven't changed anything
except the debug level, so I'm not sure what happened to suddenly make it
process all the stale tokens.
