Agreed, and that would be sufficient even if the software development is expected to run in maintenance mode.  I think though that the discontinuity between the actual and perceived utility of the software is a very stern reminder that, as Jason points out, the project does need some sort of direction.

I have decided, for myself, to continue using the software.  I will put aside thoughts of doing a similar thing (in Tcl).  Such an ambition is wasted when the only benefit is going to be a slightly more end-user-focussed experience.  I will almost certainly bring some complaints to the table down the road (I can't wait to see if mj_email handles Resent-* fields for authentication), but I'm also prepared to hack my way around if I can't make it work officially.  I hope there's enough impetus to make that possible if I can't figure it out myself, because my perl is very, very rough.
