Quoting from Mew manual <http://www.mew.org/en/info/release/mew_8.html#smtp>:

| If an SMTP server requires authentication, Mew automatically asks
| you to input your password.

I guess you should set ("smtp-port" . "587") or so to correct the
configuration.

To debug, set mew-debug to 'net and see the "*Mew debug*" buffer.
