[mew-int 3160] mew 6.4 on Ubuntu 13.04 - hang

I am trying to upgrade to:

  Ubuntu 13.04
  Emacs 24.2+1-2ubuntu2
  Mew 1:6.4-3

When starting mew in emacs, it hangs emacs with "Updating status ..."
for ever.

When looking at what was going on, mew tried to run gpg, which
probably somehow failed/aborted because gpg was <defunct>. Mew did not
recover. Then I removed gpg. It still hung on running ssh <defunct>.
Then I removed ssh. It still hung om running mewstunnel <defunct>.
Then I removed mewstunnel. After that mew at least starts, but a
system without gpg or ssh is not very useful.

Any hints how to debug this?

Regards,
Harald.

PS: I don't have any problems with mew 6.3 on emacs23, but Ubuntu
    13.04 "wants" newer versions.
