In my experience, that is quite likely to be the case.  I have seen these, 
and they have always been messages with another email message as an 
attachment, quite possibly the message was attached using Apple Mail.  The 
only workaround I've found is to log in to the Gmail web interface, and 
delete or move the offending message.  I have a "Broken" Gmail label/folder 
especially for this.

Frankly, Gmail's IMAP implementation remains poor, and I'm sure they have 
no motivation or intent to improve it.
