I suspect part of the problem that email itself is in decline. A university 
recently did a survey of faculty and student email use and found that, 
between 2008 and 2013, it had declined by nearly 40%. Partly this is a 
student phenomenon: they now use social networking tools and other such 
stuff to communicate. But this overall trend won't help to persuade 
developers to keep niche products in service.
