I understand... different people have different use cases...

What I would do in such a case in TB is create a separate Address Book
for each class, create the List, then delete them when the semester is over.

I'm curious - you have to get the email address into the list somehow, I
mean, they aren't going to just magically populate themselves, so, how
are you doing it now? If you have or can get them into a CSV (or
preferably LDIF), you can easily import them into a separate address
book, then quickly make a list.

But, I also understand if that isn't what you want to do.

No idea how long before the Address Book rewrite will take, but they
aren't planning on adding many new features (we will *finally* be
getting full search capability across all Address Books in 38 though!)
until the rewrite occurs...

Like I said earlier, TB has excellent Identity management, that is
expanded even more with an Addon or two...
