It stores outgoing messages in a special local mailbox when the user clicks "Send", then it uses SMTP to send the messages in that mailbox. i.e., the special mailbox is used as a queue to manage messages being sent in the background. If there is no internet connection, or the user has disabled the queue, the messages are on hold in that mailbox until connectivity comes back or the queue is re-enabled. This is similar in functionality to the "outbox" that several other clients have. -- Cyrus Daboo
