It's a reasonable extension, but it should have been documented. There also should have been some attempt to improve the name -- maybe add a new variable $default_mailbox, whose default value would be $spoolfile. Too late now, I guess. If I had ever wanted that added function, I probably would have tried it, to see if it worked. I've never wanted Mutt to default to some IMAP server; I configure that explicitly.
