When does one need to press 'm' to use the mailcap entry to view, and when does pressing just Enter suffice? This might be one of those instances in which the difference between <Enter> and <Return> makes a difference. In newer mutt instances the same thing was happening to me (or at least I _think_ I remember this happening) and I had to add this to my .muttrc: bind attach <Return> view-mailcap That fixed the issue.
