reason for sasl authentication failure

I have minimal mail sending software on the system, specificly mailutils and 
the mail.mailutils package was never configured to send anything anywhere let 
alone in any secure context.
This problem then will get forwarded to mailutils users who may have something 
useable as a configuration solution for mail.mailutils.
