Ooh, ouch!  I don't like the idea of using a single-file format like
mbox because it's so easy for it to get corrupted; say, if '>From'
escaping gets messed up.  But Maildir only defines a single directory,
and you can't have subdirectories within them.

I'm not sure what to do here.  IMHO it would be nice to be able to 
fire up mutt and edit a list archive, so I don't want an ng-arch only 
archive format.  Options might be:

   * Use Maildir, damn the torpedoes.  If you're indexing python-list,
it'll be a bit slow, but that's why we have caching, right?

   * Use something else to store messages: a .ZIP file, maybe?  
Would MH-format be any better?  Any suggestions?

Perhaps.  Not sure how to protect this from spammers crawling the site
looking for all /list/author/XXX URLs.
