Well, the new system will also need to have an acceptability, deployment,
migration plan probably with revamp cost estimates. Companies will expect it
to. The "great written" plan will make it available to increase
acceptability.

At any rate,  I don't think anyone realistically believes SMTP will go away
anytime soon.   I think in the final analysis, the new solution will need to
be or offer some level of backward compatibility (at a level that does not
break the fundamental security of the new system), and if not, no doubt, a
tertiary (3rd party) market of proxies, middle ware, etc, will evolve to
cover the gap.  This  would be a big $$$ window of opportunity for many
developers, not just the main vendors.

Can we solve the problem with the current system?

I think so.  SMTPV2 (as you call it) can definitely backward compatible.  I
think this group, as I understand it,  offers us an "open minded"
opportunity to bring out all the issues that isn't oppressed with the idea
that we must be backward compatible.

In my opinion, the backward compatibility issues has minimized the potential
solutions that can be dreamed up.

In my opinion, I think this was what hurt the ASRG group because it basic
charter for "proposals" was to be based on Mr. Crocker guideline of current
SMTP support.

In my opinion,  I think this also speaks of the functional specification
that has it written in stone that it is inherently insecure and that nothing
was "enforceable" and that certain aspects are interpreted 2, 3 or 4
different ways!

So in my opinion, under these conditions, we lost the battle before a single
shot was fired!

So I think we should just open our minds and bring it all out and then
narrow it down to a final solution.  In think in the end, it will be a
SMTPV2 or something close to it.  That's my opinion of course. <g>
