I have a Japanese environment, since that is my second language (modulo a little bit of German in high school 33+ years ago). So it converted your ISO 8859-1 into ISO-2022...as best it could. I manually edited out the troublesome character in this message, I think. The next version of Pine is intended to fully support UTF-8 and not have these problems.
