The default pine/UW IMAP server settings prevents data loss in cases where lock files is the only working locking mechanism. In cases where all programs reading and writing in /var/spool/mail are using semaphores, such as FreeBSD, there is no reason to set the mode to 1777, unless you want to be sure to get rid of the error message. In pine there is a setting, quell-lock-failure-warnings, which stops the warnings, but there is no equevalent for the UW IMAP server.
