Last time we thought about adding it we decided that the benefits were outweighed by the problems it causes. NAT boxes often have aggressive timeout behavior. If the mail client is sitting IDLEing waiting for new mail notification it will be considered inactive by an intervening NAT box and the connection may be squashed. More frequent polling for new mail refreshes the NAT's timeout timer.
