To the best of my knowledge, RFC822 doesn't deal with paint issues on 
character terminals in screen mode.

The problem is that Pine calculates the subject width as if a tab is one 
space wide, then paints the screen letting the terminal settings 
determine the actual tab width. This causes the subject line to overflow 
in the next message's display space, which obviously is not intended 
behavior.

If the bug were any more annoying I'd have looked into it myself because 
it can't be that hard to fix or at least work around.

Whichever way you slice it, it's a minor inconsistency in Pine.
