I have a primary INBOX which is local (not a local imap server, on my own
local machine) and corresponds to the default /var/spool/mail area, and a
secondary one on a remote site (which is actually pop not imap) defined as

incoming-folders=RCM {pop.retecivica.milano.it/service=pop3/user=xxxx}

don't think it makes a difference. In my folder collections I have a
number of local subdirectories, as well as two alternate news servers (on
remote sites)

folder-collections=MAIL mail/[],
       ...lot of local subdirectories...
       CNR {news.ba.cnr.it/nntp}#news.[],
        CU {news.cu.mi.it/nntp}#news.[]

I believe some of my colleagues (those on PC, not on Unix like me) keep
two folder collections (a local one and a local IMAP server).

Don't see the problem. As far as I can understand, having it in "incoming
folders" does not imply it is kept open or checked, it's just a
convenience to have it listed together with the INBOX.

Maybe you do not have a pinerc syntax problem but a permission problem.
Have you looked at the pine-debug files ?
