I did try -h in the lpr invocation, didn't work for me. But it turns out
that while I can't use "-P hp5650" or "--printer=hp5650" in the a2ps
command itself without getting errors and no printer output (regardless
of what it says in man a2ps...) What I can do however is to leave
off the piping to lpr and a2ps sends it to the default printer (which
happens to be hp5650) and if I don't pipe it to lpr I don't get the
request id sheet... So I guess it's not a problem any more...

I wasn't the one having that problem. But I don't think Brian was having
a problem getting the a2ps options he wanted to "stick", but rather he
wasn't figuring out how to do "the simple thing" of how to make his a2ps
custom print command to "stick" as the default printer for pine...

I suggested he highlight it on the _M_ain _S_etup _P_rinters screen and
press S to _S_elect it.  It isn't real obvious that all you need to do to
set pine's  default is to "select" it on that screen until you play with
the select command and then pine tells you it's now the default...

 Well the OP was having a problem with text bleeding of the left edge of
 his paper when pine simply fed plain text to his printer. But the only
 issue I had was the bottom border did that if I used the a2ps '-B'
 option to ditch the default "Sheet" header line. But for some reason
 redefining the sheet header as no text via the a2ps option '-b""' worked
 without losing the bottom border.

 Why that should work that way is beyond me...
