I do the same thing, and I actually think this is a feature. After the 
first invocation of the pipe-attachment command it does remember the 
command to use.

Considering that, for my script, the pipe-message function requires the 
^W (raw) subfeature and the pipe-attachment requires the absence of ^W, 
I think I'd be bitten if the invocation were shared between the two 
functions.

Unless I misunderstand your needs, of course -- I _think_ I understand 
what you're trying to do :-)

I just make sure the script is in my path and can be activated with a 
short 4-character command.
