Pine + Courier IMAP

OK, someone hit me with the clue stick here.
I have two completely separate installations of pine (4.64) and Courier
IMAP (4.0.5 in one instance, 4.1.1 in the other), on different systems
(both RHEL3 with all patches) that are not related in any way. I am using
IMAP over TLS in both cases. I built both Courier IMAP and Pine from
source in the same fashion. Everything works very well; both systems
function identically with one exception. A folder collection is defined in
both .pinerc's using the same syntax:
folder-collection="Stuff" {hostname/user=XXX/tls}INBOX.[]
For system #1, pine displays the names of folders in this collection like
so:
name1 name2 name3 name4
and for system #2, like so:
name1[.] name2[.] name3[.] name4[.]
This difference is user independent. Apart from this one difference,
everything works well. I cannot spot what is different between the two
installations (apart from the version of Courier IMAP). Someone put me out
of my misery and give me a clue as to what might be causing this; I only
need a clue and not a solution. Thanks.
-Steve
