[snip] In my experience running multiple copies of Pine against the Cyrus IMAP server, Pine instances are only loosely synchronized. If I delete a message in Pine "A", that change will appear in Pine "B" several minutes later. I assume the lag depends on the frequency that Pine polls the IMAP server. The IMAP server itself always maintains a consistent internal view and operations on mailboxes are atomic. There is no harm in running multiple instances of Pine, but you can easily get a race condition like the original poster described.
