pine, imap and folders

I'm switching my mail system over from mbox to maildir format to make it
more Courier-imap compatible. I have everything working except the
folders in pine. I used to have my incoming folders under the
"incoming-folders" header, along with my inbox but using imap if I put
them there it tells me the folder doesn't exist or must be subscribed to.
The exact same .pinerc setting works for bringing up the folders as a
separate collection:
incoming-folders="IMAP folders" {mailhost}INBOX.[]
Any tips or pointers? Having the folders in the incoming area rather than a
separate collection allows you to jump between folders with the tab button.
Thanks!
