Why did you become more happy when switching to IMAP? One of those reasons wasn't really IMAP per se, but switching to a concurrent-access format as well (cyrus or Maildir). It meant that I could have, say, two pines and a Thunderbird open at work, I could leave a PINE running at home, and mail could be checked by BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) pickup without causing trouble. At one point I was using both local and IMAP access, but there were some nifty features of using an IMAP server (indexing!) that weren't provided by local access. I have a huge mailbox because I'm too lazy to clean things out of it, and startup is much quicker over IMAP. Another reason, everything looks the same. I don't have to worry about vague differences between Pine's view of something and other email clients' views of the same thing, which was something I always used to be fiddling with. As for speed, I now run PINE on my computer at home accessing my hosted IMAP server (cyrus), and it's as fast as if it was local. Neither of these machines are newer than 5 years, so it's not like I'm relying on horsepower to get the job done.
