"Thank you" to everyone who responded to my query. Seems that the ability to search backwards hasn't been implemented. I think it would be a useful addition. In my case, I'm often looking for the "last word" on a particular subject, and searching backward would get me there the fastest. (searching forward gets me to the first email on a given subject -- if i continue to search forward I do eventually get to the last match -- but since I don't know it is the last one, I search forward again, wrapping back to the first match. So I have to continue the process and remember to stop at the right time. quite frustrating if you deal w/ a lot of email).
