I think that the primary problem that I encountered (apart from the 
latest version of the PINE 4.64 build for Debian, being for oldstable, 
and not for stable, thence the problem with the ssl library version), is 
a problem that I have with the mirrors for the Debian etch version, for 
obtaining packages via the sources.list file, whence I obtain errors 
every time I run Synaptic or apt, and can only download security 
upgrades, and not additional packages, across the Internet.

I cannot get correct paths for the Australian mirrors for Debian, for 
etch (stable).

But, that is a Debian issue, and, not a PINE issue.

After reverting my sources.list file, thence being prompted for the 
first installation DVD, where the required packages were found for the 
ssl library version, I managed to instal the library, then managed to 
instal PINE 4.64, and I have just worked out how to modify the Postfix 
setup to allow mail to be sent from the new workstation, and, so, after 
all of that (and buying many Postfix books to try to find how to add a 
new computer, as it wasn't easy to find in the books), I seem to have 
got it all working (especially if this message makes it to the mailing 
list, as that should truly show that I can now send and receive messages 
using this new computer). It took about 2 hours, to copy my mail 
directory (du -h shows 5.8GB), using gFTP across a 10Mbps LAN.
