Alpine: no connection to IMAP, but Pine does it. Why?

Hi all:
I have uw-imapd 2006k installed on Mac OS 10.4. I exclusively use it to
access may mail on localhost.
Pine 4.64 works fine. -- However, when I try to connect to localhost,
Alpine 1.0 gives me (with the same .pinerc settings as used for Pine!!):
[>Connection failed to localhost,143: Connection refused<]
I'm not using any options (e.g. /ssl), but I'm using "password-less" login
via ssh (ssh-path=/usr/bin/ssh, ssh-command=[default]); see
<http://web.archive.org/web/20030426045052/www.washington.edu/pine/pine-info/1999.12/msg00118.html>.
How can I get Alpine to work as Pine does?
(As I said, Pine works, Alpine does not -- same machine, same imapd, same .pinerc.)
Any hint? Thanks!
Claus
