unix mbox as default

For reasons of compatibility with other tools I have all my local folders 
in Unix mbox format. However, Alpine creates new folders with the mbx 
format by default. I am using the binary distribution for Windows.

How can I set the default mailbox format to Unix mbox?

Note: creating a unix mbox with #unix\mymailbox.mbox or such does not seem 
to work either.
