error messages

Ubuntu installed an update to Alpine and suddenly when I invoke the spell 
checker I get "Alternate speller terminated abnormally (-1)" Also, after
rebooting for an unrelated problem when I call up alpine I get "Folder 
vulnerable - error creating /var/mail/holtzm.lock: No such file or 
directory".

Can someone shed some light on these, mostly how to correct?
