Reviewing a zipped folder

Hello,
I was wandering if there is an option, or if one can be added, to enable
one to see, in Preview mode even, a zipped folder.
The idea is that people keep folders which they need but zip them (via gzip on 
a linux machine) to save some 80-90% of the space.
Then, when they want to look for an item there, it would be usefull if they 
won't have to go through the process of manualy unzipping these folders
(then zipping them later again), but rather be able to preview the folder
(using zcat?) in a transparent to them manner, so that they can search for a 
specific item/string they want to find.
Has anyone done this ?
