If you are using IMAP, you should be using Maildir folders. These do not require lock files and the folders are created properly by the IMAP server when you write to a .folder/

If you MEAN maildirs, then this happens automatically. If you mean folders for mail that contain mbox files, then you have to jump through hoops to create sub-folders.
