I still think it might be a server fault that they haven't fixed.

Have you tried downloading the messages with something other than getmail?

Maybe mpop (http://mpop.sourceforge.net/)?  

I recently built mpop and msmtp for NetBSD from pkgsrc; also for FreeBSD from the ports collection, would like to try these out.
