qmail admin softlimit

Hi all
as you know I installed Qmail from Thibs site.
I would enlarge the softlimit to receive attached file up to 20Mb.

I tried to set it with
echo '8000000' > /var/qmail/control/databytes

then
  qmailctl restart

but nothing changes.

Where is my mistake? ( Do not consider the 20Mb as an error... I know it 
is..)
