I'm not against containers (and this does look interesting), but I've 
gotten pretty far without needing containers for this sort of thing. 
Instead, I use a cross-platform Unix package manager to build binary 
packages for what I need, with the build options I need, on just about 
any Unix.

The package management system is called "pkgsrc". I happen to be the 
maintainer for the qmail package, and I'll be presenting my work at 
pkgsrcCon next month in Berlin:
