The long game here is, how do we eventually make everyone=E2=80=99s patches u=
nnecessary? My intuition is that we can do this mostly by gently expanding q=
mail=E2=80=99s architecture to provide a few more extension points, such tha=
t everyone=E2=80=99s problems can be solved by Unix programs that can be com=
posed into the runtime configuration by a sysadmin.

The short-to-medium game here is, how do we produce updates that are simulta=
neously easy enough and valuable enough for qmail users to track, carrying t=
heir custom patches with them? We=E2=80=99ve intended for notqmail 1.07 to b=
e such an update, but we won=E2=80=99t know till we hear from folks who are t=
rying it. So we hope folks will do that.
