Question about qmail-ldap smtp authentication

When I use authentication in smtp, qmail-ldap use nss_ldap ?
When I use authentication in smtp, qmail-ldap use ldapserver defined in 
/var/qmail/control/ldapserver ?
Or qmail-ldap use ldapserver only for emails lookup ?
