How can I check if ldap server is taking too long time to reply?

It's strange, I have enabled the RBL check at FW level instead of  
Kaspersky Antispam (which was after qmail), so qmail received now very  
few smtp connections (since firewall drop many spam). But this doesn't  
fix the problem, I continue receiving temporary verify errors, but now  
I receive many "temporary verify error: ÃÃ@" instead of "temporary  
verify error: "

Server load appear normal.

Respect to Index, I have this on /etc/openldap/slapd.conf:

# qmail - indices
index   objectClass     eq
index   mail,mailAlternateAddress,uid                   eq,sub
