configure script won't recognize scanners

Ok, I can't for the life of me figure what's wrong. Everything is the latest, I've got the latest SpamAssassin and Clamav both install and working, but every time I try running ./configure the scanners= is blank. Even using the --scanners option doesn't work. I know a little bit about shell scripts and tried looking through the configure script even put in a few echo lines for debugging, but nothing popped out as being obvious. Any suggestions?
